Vidya Kotamraju is a Vancouver-based dancer of the Classical Indian dance form of Bharata Natyam. She has been training under Jai Govinda, Artistic Director of Mandala Arts and Culture in Vancouver, Canada since 2004.  

 

Vidya was introduced to the world of dance and music by her mother, Manju Rao. She received her initial training in Bharata Natyam from Sheila Jagadish Kumar in Goa, India and was an active solo and group performer for several years in India.

 

Vidya performed her Arangetram in 2007 at the Frederick Wood Theatre, UBC to over 200 patrons from the community. She has since performed for Mandala Arts and Culture as a soloist and group performer, notably in productions, The Temptation of Buddha and The Monk and The Courtesan. She has also performed for the Mayor at the Vancouver City Hall, Crimson Cabaret, Dance Centre's Silk Route Festival,  Wish 150 A Long Way Home Exhibit, Namaste Canada and the Vancouver Cultural Olympiad among others.

 

Most recently, Vidya has performed for Spirit of India festival at PNE, DiwaliFest and International Indian Cultural Festival.

 Bharata Natyam is one of the main Indian classical dance forms with a history of over 2000 years and embodies art, culture and philosophy in India. It is the synchronization of Expression, Music, Rythm and Dance to create inticrate body movements and variations.

 

Arangetram is a public graduation solo performance and is a major milestone in a dancers journey culminating after several years of dance training.
